Vintage Appalachian reverse-painted glass advertising thermometer featuring a Western cowboy silhouette theme, Clarksburg, WV
$50.00
Details
This is a vintage reverse-painted glass advertising thermometer featuring a Western cowboy silhouette theme.
* Subject: A framed wall-hanging thermometer with a reverse-painted glass scene showing a cowboy on a bucking horse behind a fence, flanked by riders and mountain scenery.
* Advertising Plaque: It is customized with a promotional plate for McClure’s Pet Hospital in Clarksburg, W. Va. with old-style telephone numbers (Phones 166-167), suggesting it dates back to the 1940s or 1950s, a common era for these decorative glass thermometers.
* Thermometer Unit: A built-in glass tube thermometer is set into the left side of the panel, measuring ambient temperature.
This piece measures 5 inches long by 4inches wide and remains in its original frame. The thermometer appears to be working just fine but I cannot guarantee it’s 100% accuracy. This is a decorative piece. So fun for any room with a cowboy western esthetic and highly collectible too!
This is a rare piece of Appalachian history and vintage rockabilly western style popular in the 40s and 50s. A little research which I will leave to its new owner ( half the fun), I bet you can discover when McClure’s used these as their promotion! I wish businesses courted their customers this way still! Don’t you?
